How to improve your brand’s visibility in AI search engines
Eight strategies that make ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name your business, from crawler access to weekly tracking.
AI assistants name the businesses they can reach, understand and confirm. Improving your visibility in AI search comes down to four things, in this order: let their crawlers in, make every page say plainly what you do and where, make the rest of the web say the same thing, and measure the answers every week. Here is each step, with what to check.
What strategies improve brand visibility in AI search engines?
1. Let the answer crawlers in
OAI-SearchBot decides whether ChatGPT search can find and link your pages, PerplexityBot whether Perplexity can cite them, and Claude-SearchBot the same for Claude. Googlebot and Bingbot feed Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or CCBot is a separate choice and does not remove you from AI search. Check your robots.txt, your CDN’s bot settings and any security plugin: one User-agent: * rule, or a firewall that challenges unknown bots, can block both kinds at once without anyone noticing.
2. Keep your pages quotable
A noindex keeps a page out of the search indexes the answers are built on. Google states that nosnippet and max-snippet:0 also keep a page out of AI Overviews and AI Mode: the page can still rank, but Google will not quote it.
3. Put the words in the HTML
Several AI crawlers read the HTML as it is served, without running JavaScript. A page whose text only appears after scripts run, or whose services and prices are pictures, gives them nothing to quote.
4. Answer the buyer’s question in the first lines
Open each service page with what you do, for whom, where, and what it costs, in plain sentences. Assistants lift short, specific statements; a page that opens with a slogan leaves them guessing.
5. Say the same thing in structured data
Add Organization or LocalBusiness JSON-LD with your exact name, address, the area you serve and the profiles that are yours (sameAs). Mark up FAQs only when the questions and answers are visible on the page, word for word.
6. Use one name everywhere
Your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, LinkedIn and press mentions should spell the business, its address and the owner’s name the same way. An assistant names a business it can confirm across sources; three spellings look like three businesses.
7. Be mentioned where the answers look
Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask and read which sites they cite and which businesses they name. Those sources, often directories, local press, trade associations and comparison pages, are where a listing or a mention counts. Earn a place on them.
8. Measure the answers, not rankings
An AI answer has no position to rank: it names a few businesses, or none. Ask the same questions every week and record who is named. That is what AI visibility tracking does.
How to show up in Google’s AI Overviews
AI Overviews and AI Mode are built from Google’s own search index, so Google Search’s rules apply: Googlebot must reach the page, the page must be indexed, and it must allow snippets. Google-Extended is a different switch; per Google it controls Gemini training and grounding and does not affect Search or AI Overviews. Beyond access, a page that answers a specific question directly, near the top, is the kind an overview can quote.
How to show up in ChatGPT search
ChatGPT search finds pages through OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, so allowing it is the precondition. GPTBot collects training data: blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search. When someone asks ChatGPT about you or pastes your link, ChatGPT-User fetches the page on their behalf.
How long it takes
Access fixes are read the next time each crawler visits, usually within days to a few weeks. Whether the answers change takes longer and is never certain: each engine re-indexes and refreshes on its own schedule. That is why I measure with the same questions every week instead of promising a date.
Check where you stand
The free AI visibility checker tests your own site for steps 1, 2, 3 and 5 in seconds, with the evidence for each result, and its Citation Check shows who the assistants name today. If you would rather have it done, that is the AI search work.
Questions about improving AI visibility
[01]What is AI visibility optimization?
It is the work of making AI assistants able to reach, read and corroborate your business, so that they name it when a buyer asks who to hire. It builds on SEO and goes by other names too: GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization).
[02]How do I increase AI citations?
Make your pages reachable and worth quoting: allow the answer crawlers, keep snippets allowed, open each page with a direct answer, and earn mentions on the sites the assistants already cite for your buyers' questions.
[03]Does SEO still matter for AI search?
Yes. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode read from Google's search index, and Microsoft Copilot from Bing's, so a page missing from those indexes cannot be quoted from them. AI search adds its own requirements on top: access for the assistants' own crawlers, plain answers, and one consistent name across the web.
[04]How can I see if AI mentions my brand?
Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask and note who they name, or run the free Citation Check after a NeshatScan: it asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok one such question and shows who each named. To follow it week by week, see AI visibility tracking.
